Charles T. Bailey Endowment for Graduate Study in Animal Behavior
Soon after Dr. Maple was appointed director of Zoo Atlanta in 1984, his close friend, Dr. Elizabeth Smithgall Watts, an esteemed anthropologist at Tulane University, offered to provide significant funding to support graduate students who would conduct original research in zoo biology and behavioral primatology at the Zoo. After the death of Dr. Watts in 1994, her surviving parents, Charles and Lessie Smithgall of Gainesville, Georgia, honored her wish by establishing an endowment at Zoo Atlanta, in 1996, to honor Dr. Watts' grandfather, Charles T. Bailey, a former City of Atlanta alderman who accompanied Elizabeth on childhood visits to the Grant Park Zoo, inspiring her future vocation. The Bailey Fund provides support for Dr. Maple's graduate students in the School of Psychology at Georgia Tech who study animal behavior at Zoo Atlanta. Five Bailey Fellows have received their doctoral degrees from Georgia Tech and now work in universities and zoological parks throughout the nation. Ursula Anderson is the most recent Charles T. Bailey Fellow.

Elizabeth Smithgall Watts Chair in Conservation and Behavior
In 2000, Charles and Lessie Smithgall provided funding for an endowed chair in conservation and behavior named for their daughter, Elizabeth Smithgall Watts. The chair was located in the School of Psychology and served as the foundation of the emerging Center for Conservation and Behavior, founded by Dr. Maple in 2003. Dr. Maple was honored as the first recipient of the Elizabeth Smithgall Watts Chair, a position he has held since 2000.
